Where you start
Southern trails near the visitor precinct
QPWS lists Creek trail as one of the southern trails. Open 24 hours. Confirm the signed shared-trail start and any temporary closures.
How to get there
- Same sealed Pyramids Road access to the Visitor Precinct as the walking tracks.
- Find the signed Creek trail on the southern trail network. Confirm it is the shared walking / MTB trail — not a walking-only summit track.
- Screenshot directions. Official pages say mobile coverage is not reliable in the park.
- Park at the visitor / day-use parking. Do not ride through picnic lawns or walking-only trackheads to “save a minute.”
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk or ride the 3.5 km circuit in the signed direction if one is marked. Official: about 1 hour on foot or 30 minutes riding.
- Expect other users. Bells on bikes. Headphones off on foot. Yield predictably — this is a shared trail, not a race loop.
- Creek crossings can be wet after rain. Ordinary caution: walk the bike if the slab is slick. This is not a tidal park and not a water crossing with a timetable.
- Stay on the designated shared trail. Mountain bikes are not permitted on walking-only tracks, including The Pyramid and Castle Rock.
What to expect
Creek trail is the shorter southern shared walking and mountain-bike circuit. Official: 3.5 km, about 1 hour on foot or 30 minutes riding, Grade 3 walking / easy MTB. You came for a designated shared loop, not a summit.
Expect other users both ways. The surface is park trail — rocky, possibly wet at creek crossings — not a purpose-built bike park with berms and signage every 50 metres.
How the day works
Start from the signed southern shared-trail network near the Visitor Precinct. Same sealed Pyramids Road drive as the walking tracks. Confirm you are on Creek trail, not Peak trail and not a walking-only track.
A tidy ride or walk is this 3.5 km circuit, then decide whether Peak trail (10.6 km return) is still a good idea. Do not add The Pyramid on the bike. Bikes stay on designated shared trails and council roads only.
Hazards
Shared-use collisions are the main avoidable problem. Bells, eyes up, and no silent overtaking on blind granite. Headphones off if you are on foot.
Wet creek crossings and decomposed granite are slick. After rain, walk the bike. Official visiting-safely advice on granite applies to tyres as much as shoes. Reception is limited — a mechanical on Peak trail is a longer problem than one on this short circuit.
Turning around
It is a circuit. If the crossing is wrong or the group is new to granite gravel, reverse or cut back to the precinct rather than pushing a full loop for pride.
Skip Peak trail if Creek trail already felt intermediate. The longer trail is a different commitment, not a free add-on because you are already clipped in.

Extra tips
- Bikes are not allowed on The Pyramid or Castle Rock walking tracks. The signed shared trails are the whole legal ride.
- Peak trail is the longer shared option (10.6 km return, intermediate MTB). Do Creek trail first if you are new to the granite gravel.
- Official listing: open 24 hours. Night riding still needs lights, a plan, and honest conditions — granite at night is not a stunt.
- After rain, decomposed granite is slick for tyres and shoes. Slow down or leave it for a dry day.
Often paired with Peak trail— only if energy and weather allow.
