Where you start

Southern trails near the visitor precinct

QPWS: one of the southern trails. Screenshot directions. Check park alerts for access and closures.

How to get there

  1. Same sealed Pyramids Road access to the Visitor Precinct as the other southern trails.
  2. Start at the signed Peak trail. Confirm the name on the sign — this is not Castle Rock, not The Pyramid, and not Creek trail.
  3. Screenshot directions. Official pages say mobile coverage is not reliable.
  4. Park at the visitor / day-use parking. If you are riding, kit up at the car: water, repair, and a layer. Do not ride walking-only trackheads.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Walk or ride the signed return. Official: 10.6 km, about 2 hours walking or 1 hour riding. Riding time varies. Pack water either way.
  2. If you are riding, this is intermediate MTB — not a first-ever off-road loop. Carry a tube or plug kit and know how to use it.
  3. Yield predictably on shared trail. After rain, expect slippery granite gravel. Walk the bike on wet slabs.
  4. Return the same way unless signs describe a different finish. Bikes stay on designated shared trails only.

What to expect

Peak trail is the longer southern shared walking / intermediate mountain-bike return. Official: 10.6 km return, about 2 hours walking or 1 hour riding, Grade 3 walking / intermediate MTB. You came for distance on a designated shared trail, not a granite summit.

It does not replace Castle Rock or The Pyramid. The name is “Peak trail,” not a peak walk. Surface is park granite gravel and bush trail. Isolation is higher than Creek trail’s 3.5 km circuit.

How the day works

Start from the signed southern trail network near the Visitor Precinct. Same sealed Pyramids Road drive. Confirm Peak trail on the sign before you roll. Return the same way unless on-site signs say otherwise.

A tidy plan is Creek trail first if you are new to the gravel, then Peak trail only if that felt easy. On foot this is a half-day. Do not stack a Grade 4 scramble afterwards because the car is in the same precinct.

Hazards

Distance and isolation first. 10.6 km with limited reception means a mechanical or a fall is a walk-out problem. Carry water, a repair kit if riding, and a turnaround time.

Speed on shared trail is the other avoidable injury. Walkers have equal claim. Wet decomposed granite is slick. Official visiting-safely advice on granite applies here. Intermediate MTB is a skill label, not a dare.

Turning around

Turn around on the same trail. Halfway is still a proper outing. Pride is a poor reason to finish 10.6 km on a puncture or in rising wind.

If Peak trail already felt like enough, skip the walking-only summits the same afternoon. Come back tomorrow for Castle Rock or The Pyramid on dry rock, on foot.

Extra tips

  • Intermediate MTB — not a first-ever off-road ride. Do Creek trail (3.5 km, easy MTB) first if you are new to the park.
  • Does not replace Castle Rock or The Pyramid if you came for a summit. Different product.
  • Official listing: open 24 hours. A night ride still needs lights, a turnaround time, and dry rock. Isolation is real.
  • From the precinct this is a half-day on foot. Do not also book a Grade 4 scramble unless the group is honest about energy.

Often paired with Creek trail— only if energy and weather allow.
