Snapshot checked 16 August 2026 (not live). QPWS listed dry conditions 20 April–31 August 2026 (low water, reduced camping, main Bald Rock Creek day-use swimming hole closed) and camping-area works 10–21 August 2026 at Castle Rock / Kambuwal / Terrawambella. Re-check the official alert pages before you lock a plan. This site does not show live closures.
Wet granite = no scramble. Do not start The Pyramid, Castle Rock or Mount Norman approaches when the rock is wet, after rain, or in strong wind. Walk Granite Arch, The Junction or Dr Roberts instead. The official Pyramid track is 3.6 km return, Grade 4, about 2 hours — the summit scramble is the point of failure, not the bush track.

1. Before you leave town

2. Fees — three official systems, not one ticket

1. Day entry

  • No day-entry or vehicle fee found on official Girraween pages (re-checked 16 Aug 2026)
  • Not a permanent guarantee — re-check parks.qld.gov.au
  • This site never takes commission on park fees

2. Camping

  • Book online only — qld.gov.au/camping
  • Cannot pay at the visitor building
  • Display the booking tag
  • Statewide QPWS from 1 Jul 2026: $7.75 pp / $31 family (confirm live)

3. Walk permits

  • None for standard designated day walks
  • The Pyramid / Castle Rock / Norman are not permit climbs
  • Summit of Mount Norman is for experienced rock climbers only

Day entry appearing free does not mean camping is free. Dollar figures change — confirm on the official camping page before you pay.

3. Which shape today?

Half-day: Arch & precinct

  • 0:00 — Visitor Precinct via New England Highway → Pyramids Road (~9 km sealed).
  • 0:20–1:00 — Granite Arch 1.6 km circuit (~30 min official). Do not climb the arch.
  • 1:00–2:00 — Picnic at Bald Rock Creek day-use (bring water).
  • Add The Pyramid only if rock is dry and the group can reverse a scramble.

Full day: Pyramid + one more

  • Morning — The Pyramid 3.6 km return, Grade 4, ~2 hours official, while rock is dry.
  • Lunch reset — food, water, fatigue check.
  • Afternoon — Castle Rock or The Junction. Not both. Not Mount Norman as an add-on.
  • Wet rock: switch to the half-day plan. That is still a good day.

4. Decision tree / order of stops

First visit / late start / kids / wet rock Granite Arch + precinct picnic. Optional Dr Roberts if the group still wants a car move. No scramble.
Fit first-timers on a dry day Morning Pyramid. Afternoon Castle Rock or Junction. One Grade 4 plus one more walk — not three summits.
Overnight camping Book Castle Rock / Kambuwal / Terrawambella online first. Dawn start without a hotel drive. Tag displayed.
Spring wildflowers Slow Arch + woodland, then Dr Roberts / Underground Creek. Flowers are beside the track, not only on the dome.
Winter clear day Early start. One Grade 4 if dry. Short second walk. Do not start the 11 km Mount Norman at 2 pm in July.
Experienced granite day One Grade 4 first. Mount Norman only if you planned the southern 4 km start that morning — not a 1 pm impulse.
