Camping is a separate fee system from day entry. Book at qld.gov.au/camping before you leave home. You cannot pay at the visitor building. Sites are generally unnumbered / first-come within the booked area. Display the booking tag.
Statewide QPWS camping fees (from 1 July 2026, check current) were $7.75 per person per night or $31.00 per family per night (children under 5 free; family definition and caps apply). Re-checked 13 September 2026: official pages listed no current Girraween park alerts. Confirm live before you travel.
Bring all drinking water. No park showers (cubicles for a BYO camp shower where provided). No generators. Fires only in designated facilities with clean BYO wood where allowed. Ground fires prohibited. Reception is not reliable — screenshot the booking and the map.
Dawn is why you camped. Do not start The Pyramid at 4 pm in winter on arrival day. Verify camping products and alerts on Queensland Parks the morning you drive.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Queensland Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Days before
Book and screenshot the tag
qld.gov.au/camping only. Print or screenshot the confirmation and the tag. Confirm which of Castle Rock, Kambuwal or Terrawambella you booked. Check the dry-conditions capacity note and any works alert for your dates.
Afternoon arrival
Set up, then a short precinct walk
Castle Rock camping is about 300 m south of the visitor building. Set up while there is light. Granite Arch or a creek wander is the arrival walk. Do not start The Pyramid at 4 pm in winter.
Evening
Food, water, quiet hours
Cook on your stove. Fires only if designated facilities and current rules allow — clean BYO wood, no ground fires. No generators. Last toilet trip with a headlamp you already tested.
Night
Cold, quiet, limited reception
Granite Belt nights can be well below freezing, including shoulder seasons. Sleep kit is the plan, not “we’ll see”. Leave a note with someone who is not on the trip. Emergency+ is worth having installed before you left town Wi-Fi.
Dawn
Pyramid or Castle Rock
This is why you camped. Dry rock only. Pick one Grade 4. Castle Rock is next door if you booked that area. The Pyramid is a short walk or a very short drive to the day-use start. Reverse if the granite is glazed.
Late morning
Pack down and one easy extra — or leave
Max stay limits apply — check current. A Junction or Arch walk after pack-down is optional. Do not add Mount Norman because you still have the tent in the bag.

Parking & access tips
- Castle Rock camping is ~300 m south of the visitor building — useful for a dawn Castle Rock start.
- Park only in signed camping / day-use areas. Do not block turning bays.
- Works alerts can mean dust, noise and a different site than you pictured — follow ranger directions and live park alerts.
- Max stay limits apply — check the current camping page.
- Day-use visitors share the precinct. Keep the site tidy and the tag visible.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Unbooked “we’ll just show up” camping
- Paying at the visitor building — you cannot
- A 4 pm Pyramid in winter
- Mount Norman after a dawn scramble the same morning
- Ground fires or collected park wood
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- People who booked online before they left home
- Walkers who want dawn granite without a 6 am hotel drive
- Groups who will carry all drinking water and a real sleep kit
- Not the plan if camping is full or dry-conditions capacity is gone — use Stanthorpe / Tenterfield instead
Booking and fee gates
- Day entry appears free. Camping is a separate online-only booking. Do not mix the two.
- Confirm live dollar figures on qld.gov.au/camping — the $7.75 / $31 figures are a dated snapshot from 1 July 2026.
- If the booking is not in your hand (or on your phone, screenshotted), you do not have a site.
- If a dry-conditions alert is live, reduced camping numbers are real — have a town-stay backup.
What success looks like
- Tag displayed, water sorted, a quiet night
- One dawn Grade 4 on dry rock — or an honest reverse
- No invented second summit because the tent is still up
- Notes for next time: two nights, or a southern Norman day from town

- Warm mid-layer (merino or fleece)900 m+ tableland: summer nights can still be cold; winter can freeze
- Water 2 L+ per person (bring all drinking water)No treated drinking water in the park — taps where present are unfiltered creek water
