Where you start

Northern walks near Bald Rock Creek / Visitor Precinct

QPWS lists The Junction as one of the northern walks. Confirm the signed trackhead at the precinct. Screenshot directions — mobile reception can be lost.

How to get there

  1. From the New England Highway, turn onto Pyramids Road and follow the sealed road ~9 km to the Girraween Visitor Precinct.
  2. Park at the Visitor Precinct / Bald Rock Creek day-use parking. The Junction is one of the northern walks — confirm the signed trackhead on the day.
  3. Screenshot directions. Official pages say mobile coverage is not reliable in the park.
  4. Same 2WD sealed access as Granite Arch and The Pyramid. No separate southern or eastern car park for this walk.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Use toilets at the precinct and carry the water you will drink. Do not assume treated taps.
  2. Follow the signed Junction track through the northern network to the meeting of the streams.
  3. Cascades and rock pools are the point. Stay off wet slabs. Observe signs and barriers — a dry-conditions alert can close the main Bald Rock Creek day-use swimming hole; verify live.
  4. Return the same way. Pair with a precinct picnic or Granite Arch — not with a Grade 4 summit unless you planned a long day.

What to expect

The Junction is the northern Grade 3 return walk to tumbling cascades and placid rock pools where streams meet. Official: 5.2 km return, about 2 hours. It is the strong “not another summit” day from the same precinct as The Pyramid and Granite Arch.

You get water in the photographs, uneven granite underfoot, and no scramble. Grade 3 here still means a real walk — roots, rock and creek edges — not a sealed path beside a lake.

How the day works

Start from the signed northern track network at the Visitor Precinct. Same sealed Pyramids Road drive as the other precinct walks. Return the same way. No car shuffle.

A good pairing is Granite Arch first (30 minutes) then The Junction if the group is still keen. Do not stack this after The Pyramid unless everyone still has a second two-hour walk in them. Picnic at Bald Rock Creek day-use when you get back.

Hazards and the dry-conditions rule

Creek rock is slick even when the rest of the park looks dry. After rain, slabs and pool edges are worse. Stay off wet granite. Supervise children at the water.

A dry-conditions alert can close the main swimming hole near Bald Rock Creek day-use until rainfall improves. That is a signed closure when live, not a suggestion. Do not treat every rock pool as a swim, and do not ignore barriers.

Turning around

Turn around on the same track whenever the group is slowing or the creek rock looks wrong. You do not need to reach the named junction for the morning to count.

If someone wants a swim and the official hole is closed, do not invent a substitute in a side pool. Come back to the precinct, picnic, and pick Granite Arch or Dr Roberts if you still want an easy finish.

Extra tips

  • Good spring wildflower and bird morning when you want water in the photographs.
  • Creek levels change after rain — do not treat social-media swimming holes as official advice.
  • Allow the official 2 hours plus sitting time at the pools. It is 5.2 km return, not a five-minute lookout.
  • If the granite on The Pyramid is wet, this is a stronger “still a proper walk” day than forcing the dome.

Often paired with Granite Arch— only if energy and weather allow.
