Girraween trails & lookouts

Start with a clear wet-rock vs summit decision. Granite Arch plus a picnic covers most mixed groups. Distances, grades and times below are official planning figures — always confirm on Queensland Parks and park alerts. Weather, closures and stair status change.

Decide before you start

  • Easy / short: Granite Arch, Dr Roberts Waterhole — high reward, still real granite underfoot.
  • Moderate creek / formation days: The Junction, Underground Creek, Sphinx & Turtle Rock, shared Creek/Peak trails.
  • Hard granite summits: The Pyramid, Castle Rock, Mount Norman — one of these, dry rock, early start.

Two hard walks plus a third “quick look” is how first visits run out of daylight. Pick the table row that matches your energy, then open the walk page for getting-there detail.

Trails FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What is the best first walk in Girraween?

Most first-timers start at Granite Arch (1.6 km circuit) if the group is mixed or the rock is wet. The Pyramid (3.6 km return, Grade 4) is the signature scramble only when granite is dry. Always verify with Queensland Parks.

How hard is The Pyramid?

Officially Grade 4, 3.6 km return, about 2 hours. The top is a steep exposed granite scramble with white markers and no ropes. Do not attempt when wet or in strong wind.

Can I do The Pyramid, Castle Rock and Mount Norman in one day?

Usually too much for a first visit. Pick one Grade 4 summit. Mount Norman from the precinct is already 11 km / 4–5 hours. Trying all three is how groups finish in the dark with no reception.
