Camping logistics: Castle Rock, Kambuwal, Terrawambella
Official Girraween camping is online-only — how the three nearby areas differ, what the fee system is, and what you cannot do on site.

Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with Queensland Parks. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official Queensland Parks imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry fees and official Queensland Parks camping bookings are never affiliated.

Camping is not day entry. There is no on-site payment. Book through the Queensland National Parks Booking Service (qld.gov.au/camping) and display your tag. School holidays and long weekends book out.
Re-checked 13 September 2026: official Girraween pages listed no current park alerts. The August 2026 dry-conditions and camping-works windows had expired. Confirm live alerts before you travel.
This site never affiliates official camping. Gateway town beds on the stay page are a different product, with a different disclosure.
Camping is not day entry
No day-entry or vehicle-access fee was listed on official Girraween pages when this guide was reviewed (16 August 2026). That does not make camping free. Camping is a separate online-only booking.
You cannot pay at the visitor building. You cannot “sort it with the ranger in the morning.” If the confirmation is not in your hand (or screenshotted), you do not have a site.
Day visitors and campers share the precinct. Keep the tag visible and the site tidy.
The three nearby areas
Castle Rock camping sits about 300 m south of the visitor information building — closest to walks. Useful for a dawn Castle Rock or a short walk to The Pyramid start.
Kambuwal is the quieter tent-oriented option. Terrawambella suits larger vans, trailers and the group tent area. Confirm current site types, max stays and facilities on the official camping page — they change with works.
Sites are generally unnumbered and first-come within the booked area. That is not the same as unbooked.
Book, tag, first-come
qld.gov.au/camping only. Print or screenshot the confirmation and the tag. Display the tag at the site.
First-come inside a booked area means you still need the booking. It does not mean roll up and take a vacant pad.
Max stay limits apply. Check the current camping page for your dates.
Fees (check current)
Statewide QPWS camping fees published as a 1 July 2026 baseline were $7.75 per person per night or $31.00 per family per night (family = one or two adults plus accompanying children under 18, max 8 people; children under 5 free). Educational rates exist for approved groups. Fees change — always use the live booking page.
This site will not invent a different dollar figure to look current. If the live page moved, the live page wins.
Water, fires, showers
No treated drinking water. Bring all you will drink and cook with. No park showers. Some camping areas have cubicles for a BYO camp shower and water — confirm current facilities officially.
Fires only in designated facilities, with clean BYO wood, and only when restrictions allow. Ground fires prohibited. No firewood collection in the park. No generators.
A stove you already know how to light is the plan, not “we’ll see about a fire.”
Dry-conditions and works (dated)
A QPWS dry-conditions alert (20 April–31 August 2026) previously reduced camping numbers and closed the main Bald Rock Creek day-use swimming hole (alert 26436). That official page had expired when re-checked 13 September 2026.
Camping-area works at Castle Rock, Kambuwal and Terrawambella (10–21 August 2026, alert 26657) had also expired on that check. A later dry-conditions or works alert can still change capacity — follow ranger directions and the live booking page.
Treat this section as history, not a live closure. Re-check official alerts the morning you travel.
When to stay in town instead
Camping full, dry-conditions capacity gone, or you need a hot shower and a hospital nearby: Stanthorpe or Tenterfield. That is still a Girraween trip.
Winter nights can be well below freezing. A Queensland beach sleep kit is the wrong kit. If you do not have a real bag, book a town bed.
Reception is not reliable. Town Wi-Fi is where you screenshot the booking, the map and the alerts.
Dogs and other surprises
No pets in the national park except certified assistance animals under official rules. Plan pet-friendly stays in Stanthorpe or Tenterfield instead.
Limited wheelchair access is described for some Castle Rock amenities and Bald Rock Creek day-use. Confirm current access notes on the official page.
Quiet hours and no generators are competence, not atmosphere branding.
